¡Hola de nuevo!
Hoy vamos a hablar un poco de las preguntas con “how” en inglés.
Si quieres saber cómo usar (y contestar a) preguntas con how old, how long, how often, etc, sigue leyndo.
Porque en inglés, usamos mucho la palabra how con un adjetivo para formar preguntas “de toda la vida”.
Claro que el tema de las preguntas es más grande, así tengo preguntas y respuestas comunes y también un artículo más completo sobre who, what, were, when, etc.
Hoy nos enfocamos en la palabra how, que muchas veces es “cómo”.
Ejemplo: Excuse me, how do I get to the train station?
Aquí veremos el uso de how old, how often, how much, how many, etc para formar preguntas. ¡Vamos allá!
How old are you?
Hace un par de semanas hablamos de preguntas del tipo “Where were you born?”
Pero otra cosa importante y muy básica es “How old are you?” que pregunta por la edad que tiene una persona. Fíjate que no habla de años, ni de “tener” años. La pregunta es así y punto.
Q: How old are you?
A: I’m thirty-eight years old.
Q: How old is María?
A: She’s twenty-one years old.
Q: How old are your sisters?
A: My sister Betty is 9, and my sister Lisa is 7.
How often do you…?
Se usa “how often” para preguntar por la frecuencia de una acción. La traducción es ¿Con qué frecuencia…? o ¿Cada cuánto tiempo? Puede usarse con presente, pasado o futuro. La cuestión es la frecuencia.
Q: How often do you talk to your parents?
A: I talk to them once a week or so.
Q: How often does she go to English class?
A: She goes three times a week.
Q: How often did you go to the beach when you lived in Málaga?
A: I went almost every day.
Q: How often will you come visit?
A: I’ll come as often as I can!
Para más, echa un vistazo a mi otra web, donde tengo un artículo sobre los adverbios de frecuencia. Pero habrás notado que en estas frases no utilizo adverbios de frecuencia “normales”. Es que hay muchas otras formas de hablar de la frecuencia de una acción.
How long…?
El otro día vimos cómo formar el presente perfecto continuo en inglés. Las preguntas en presente perfecto continuo hablan de la duración, y muchas veces se forman con “How long…?”
Q: How long have you been learning English?
A: I’ve been learning English since I was a kid.
Q: How long has he been working there?
A: He’s been working there for several years.
Q: How long have you been dating Maria?
A: We’ve been together for two years.
En este último, dating sería que las dos personas están saliendo. Aquí si quieres tengo más vocabulario para el amor, el estado civil, etc.
Otras preguntas con “how long” en inglés
También podemos preguntar por duración en pasado, en futuro, etc. Somos flexibles así.
Aquí un ejemplo de get como “llegar” a un sitio.
Q: How long does it take you to get to the office?
A: It takes me about 20 minutes on the metro.
Q: How long were you living in Italy?
A: I was living there for eight years. Three in Rome and five in Milan.
Q: How long is that film?
A: It’s really long… more than two hours.
Seguimos con un tema de los clásicos…
“How much” y “how many” en inglés
El tipo más famoso de pregunta con how es (probablemente) el how much y el how many. Estas preguntas son importantes porque hablan de la cantidad o el número de algo.
La regla es lo siguiente:
- “How much” para cantidad (algo incontable)
- “How many” para número (algo contable)
Pero como hemos visto por aquí un par de veces, el tema de time y money (por ejemplo) es complicado. Para ser muy claros, doy un par de preguntas sencillas…
Q: How much coffee do you usually drink in a day?
A: I have three or four coffees in a day. You?
Q: How many people did you invite to the party?
A: I invited three people. How many did you invite?
Con eso, debería mencionar que “people” también es complicado, porque es plural. No es igual a “gente” en español, que sería singular. Así que “¿Cuánta gente?” se traduce por “How many people…?”
How tall, how big, how early etc
Hacemos muchas preguntas más con how más un adjetivo.
Así tenemos how tall para preguntar la altura.
Q: How tall are you?
A: About six feet tall.
Tenemos how big para preguntar por el tamaño.
Q: How big is their new house?
A: It’s not huge, but it’s bigger than ours.
Tenemos how early para preguntar por lo temprano que hacemos algo.
Q: How early do we have to get up tomorrow?
A: I think we should get up at 6.
También how far para preguntar por la distancia.
Q: How far is it? We’ve been walking forever!
A: Just a few more minutes.
Y una larga etcétera.
